Stagecoach is the movie that made John Wayne a star. Before this
movie, he was just a B movie player. Wayne plays The wanted Ringo Kid
in this John Ford classic that features: John Carradine, Claire
Trevor, Andy Devine and Thomas Mitchell in his academy award winning
performance as the alcoholic doctor. In this film, 9 travelers make
their way through hostile Indian territory which makes for a few
shootouts and some pretty good stunts. Oh, and don't forget the
cavalry coming to the rescue. 1939 was a difficult year for a film to
get noticed since Gone With the Wind and The Wizard of Oz were made
that same year. However Stagecoach still managed to score 2 academy
awards, the aforementioned one for Mitchell and one for best score.
This was one of a number of films that teamed John Wayne up with John
Ford. Even though John Wayne's character says: "I guess a man can't
break out of prison and into society in the same week.", Wayne manages
to break into the big time. The rest, as they say, is Hollywood
history. |
